Black Screen on Video Chat? Work Out Whose Video It Is
A black screen on video chat has different causes depending on which video is black. If your own preview is black, your camera isn't sending a picture; if only your partner's video is black, the problem is on their side or in the connection; and if their video is blurred with a Safety check label, that's Omlet's nudity filter running a quick check that clears by itself.
Find your case below and follow its fixes. There's also a section for the reverse problem: you can see yourself, but the other person sees black.
Which screen is black?
| What you see | What it means | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Your own tile is black or shows a message | Your camera isn't delivering video | Case 1 |
| Partner's side says Connecting… | The call is still being set up | Case 2 |
| Partner's side says Their camera is off | They turned their camera off or don't have one | Case 2 |
| Partner's video is blurred with Safety check… | Omlet's on-device nudity check | Case 3 |
| Video hidden, with Next person and Report buttons | The filter detected possible nudity | Case 3 |
| You see yourself, they say they see black | Your video isn't reaching them | Case 4 |
Case 1: Your webcam shows a black screen
Omlet labels your own tile when it can't get a picture, which narrows things down quickly:
- Waiting for your camera… The browser is waiting for you to answer its permission prompt. Look near the address bar.
- Camera blocked. Access was refused. Click the camera icon in the address bar, allow it, then press Try again.
- Camera is busy. Another app or tab has the webcam; see camera being used by another app.
- No camera found. The browser can't see or use a camera. Plug one in, or check your system's camera settings.
- Your camera is off. You switched it off with the camera button. Tap it again.
If there's no message and the preview is simply black, the camera has started but isn't seeing anything:
- Slide open the privacy shutter, or press your laptop's camera key.
- Make sure the browser hasn't picked an infrared or virtual camera (OBS, effects apps) that's sending a blank feed.
- A laptop's built-in camera can't be used with the lid closed, even when it's connected to a monitor.
- In Chrome or Edge, a graphics glitch can blank the preview. Switch off Use graphics acceleration when available (Settings → System, or System and performance in Edge), relaunch and test. Turn it back on if nothing changes.
- On phones, switching apps or locking the screen pauses the camera. Come back and reload if the preview stays black.
Case 2: The other person's video is black
When your partner's side is dark, there's usually little you can fix on your end, but you can tell what's going on.
- Connecting… for a long time: the two browsers are struggling to reach each other. If it fails, Omlet tells you it couldn't connect and tries someone else. If it happens with everyone, see video chat stuck on connecting.
- Their camera is off: they switched it off or have no camera. You can still chat by text below the video, or press Next.
- Black with no message, but you can hear them: their camera may be covered, or their video isn't getting through. Ask in the chat, and press Next if it doesn't change.
- Video freezes or goes dark mid-call: usually a weak connection on one side; see video chat lagging.
If every partner's video is black or frozen while your own preview works fine, the problem is probably your network, a VPN or a strict firewall, not the people you're meeting.
Case 3: A blurred screen that says Safety check
This isn't a fault. On Omlet, each new partner's video starts blurred while a check on your own device looks for nudity. It runs in your browser, so no image is sent anywhere for it.
- The usual case: the blur clears on its own within a few seconds (up to about four) once the check passes.
- Video hidden: if the filter detects possible nudity, the video stays hidden and you get Next person and Report buttons. Use either.
- It happens with everyone: that's by design, not a sign of a problem with a particular person.
Repeated detections are reported automatically, and only the reason is sent, never an image. For the details, read how on-device nudity detection works.
Case 4: The other person sees a black screen
If your preview looks fine but your partner says they see black, go through these in order:
- Check your camera button. If your tile says Your camera is off, tap the camera button to turn it back on.
- Ask what exactly they see. Connecting… means the call hasn't finished setting up; a blur with Safety check… clears in a few seconds; a frozen image means your video stopped reaching them.
- Lighten your upload. Pause big uploads such as cloud backups and game updates, and turn off a VPN, then try again with the next person.
- Reload and start again. A fresh page gets a fresh connection.
If several people in a row can't see you, the problem is on your side: work through Case 1, then your connection.
When the camera hardware is to blame
If your camera is black in your system's own camera app too (Camera on Windows, Photo Booth on a Mac, the Camera app on a phone) with no shutter, key or other app involved, the webcam or its driver is the issue. Restart, install system updates, and on Windows check the camera in Device Manager.
A black screen often comes with sound problems. If people can't hear you either, work through microphone not working in browser as well.
Ready to try again? Your own preview appears on Omlet before you press Start, so you can check it first, then start a random video chat.
