Video Chat by Country With Omlet's Country Filter

Updated · 5 min read

Random video chat by country means you only get matched with people from one country you choose. On Omlet that's the country filter: pick one of 200+ countries, use it free for your first day, then unlock it for $3 one time on that device and browser. The free day starts with a card, and the $3 is charged once when it ends unless you cancel in Settings. There's no subscription.

Chatting itself is free and matches you Worldwide by default. Below is exactly how the filter works, what it costs, where its limits are, and how to get more matches out of it.

How to choose a country, step by step

  1. Open Omlet in your browser and confirm you're 18 or older. There's no account or sign-up.
  2. Check your own flag. Omlet detects your country automatically and shows it to the people you meet.
  3. Open the country filter and pick one country from the list. Matching switches from Worldwide to that country.
  4. Press Start (or the → key). You're paired with whoever from that country has waited longest and fits your settings.
  5. Press Next to meet someone else from the same country, or switch back to Worldwide any time.

The country filter is the only filter Omlet has, and it holds one country at a time. If you want to meet people from several places, Worldwide is the way to do it. Our international video chat page covers that side.

Price and rules at a glance

The filter has a few rules worth knowing before you rely on it. Here they are in one place.

QuestionAnswer
Is chatting free?Yes. Worldwide video and text chat cost nothing.
Is the country filter free?Your first day is free. After that it's $3, paid once.
Is it a subscription? No. There's nothing to cancel and no renewal.
Where does it work after I pay?On the device and browser you paid in. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers.
What if I clear my browser data? The unlock is lost, so avoid clearing Omlet's site data.
How many free days do I get?One per device and home network.
Who handles the payment?Stripe. Omlet never sees your card.

Use your free day as a test. Pick the country you care about, chat at the times you'd normally be online, and notice how long matches take. If the waits feel long, Worldwide may suit you better, and you'll have found that out without paying anything.

Unlock the filter in the browser you actually chat in. If you've added Omlet to your home screen, buy it there, and before cleaning up browser data, read how to clear site data for one website so you can leave Omlet's untouched.

A match has to fit both people

The filter works both ways. Omlet only pairs two people when the match fits both of their settings, so choosing a country narrows who you meet and who can meet you.

  • Say you're in Canada and set the filter to Brazil. Someone in Brazil on Worldwide can be matched with you.
  • Someone in Brazil whose own filter is set to Japan won't be matched with you, because you don't fit their choice.
  • While you're on Worldwide, people elsewhere who set their filter to your country can still find you.

This keeps things fair: nobody gets placed in a chat they specifically filtered out.

Why matches can take longer, and what helps

A filter shrinks the pool. When fewer people from your chosen country are online, you'll wait longer between chats than you would on Worldwide. Omlet is new, so this is worth expecting rather than being surprised by.

  • Chat in their evening. People are most likely to be free after work. Check the local time before you start; each country page, like our Brazil video chat page, lists its time zones.
  • Try a neighboring country. If you want Spanish speakers, for example, several countries could suit you.
  • Switch back to Worldwide for a while if the wait gets long, then try again later.
  • Ask on Worldwide too. Plenty of people outside a country speak its language or know it well, so a quick "where are you from?" can find them without the filter.

Good reasons to filter by country

Worldwide is great for variety. A single country makes sense when you have a specific goal.

  • Language practice. Meet people where your target language is spoken. Our language exchange video chat page explains the method.
  • Trip planning. Ask locals about food, neighborhoods and what's worth seeing before you go.
  • A taste of home. Living abroad and missing your accent, your jokes, your football league? Filter for home.
  • Same time zone. Chatting with people in a nearby country means fewer half-asleep conversations.
  • Curiosity. Pick a place you know little about. Our United Kingdom video chat page is one example of the greetings and tips each country page offers.

How your own country is detected

Like most websites, Omlet works out your country from your internet connection, and the flag shown to your chat partners comes from that. If you use a VPN, the detected country may be the VPN server's country instead of yours.

That matters for the two-way rule above: people filtering for a country will only meet you if your detected country matches. For the technical background, read how websites know your country.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose more than one country at once?

No. The country filter holds one country at a time. You can change it whenever you like, or switch back to Worldwide to meet people from everywhere. There are no other filters on Omlet, so the country is the only thing you can narrow by.

If I get a new phone, do I have to pay again?

Yes. The $3 unlock belongs to the device and browser you paid in and doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers. Clearing your browser data also removes it, so keep that in mind before you reset your browser or phone.

Do I need the country filter to meet people from other countries?

No. Worldwide matching is the default and it's free, so you'll meet people from many countries without paying anything. The filter is only for when you want everyone you meet to come from one particular country.

Why does Omlet show the wrong flag for me?

Your country is detected from your internet connection. A VPN or proxy can make you appear to be in another country. Turning the VPN off and reloading the page usually fixes it.
