Video Chat with People from Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a dense, vertical city wrapped around a harbor, with green hills and hiking trails just beyond the towers. People you meet might live on Hong Kong Island, among the busy streets of Kowloon around Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po, out in the New Territories, or on quieter islands like Lantau, Lamma and Cheung Chau. Cantonese is the everyday language, English is widely used in business, signs and higher education, and Mandarin is common too, so plenty of people switch between them easily.
Hong Kong Time is eight hours ahead of GMT with no daylight saving, so a 9 PM chat there is early afternoon in Berlin and breakfast time in New York. Easy conversation starters include weekend dim sum, milk tea and pineapple buns at a cha chaan teng (a local diner), Cantopop, the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour, and hikes like Dragon's Back. Learning Chinese? Our Chinese page pairs well with the Cantonese greetings below.

Tips for chatting with people from Hong Kong
- Many people go by both a Chinese name and an English one. If someone introduces themselves as Kelvin or Winnie, that's the name to use.
- Mixing English words into Cantonese is completely normal, so you'll hear "OK", "sorry" or "meeting" right in the middle of a sentence.
- Practicing Mandarin? Ask first. Cantonese is the default in daily life, though many people are happy to switch for a while.
- Ask for a food recommendation by neighborhood; almost everyone has a favorite noodle shop, bakery or dai pai dong (open-air food stall) and loves to name it.
Only meet people from Hong Kong
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Hong Kong, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Hong Kong and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Hong Kong, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Hong Kong are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
