Are Random Video Chats Recorded? Two Different Answers
Are random video chats recorded? There are two separate answers. Whether the site records calls depends on how it's built and what its privacy policy says; Omlet doesn't record or store calls at all. But the person you're talking to can always record their own screen, on any platform, and you usually can't tell when they do.
So the practical rule is simple: check the site's policy to know what the site does, and assume anything you show a stranger could be saved by that stranger.
Two questions people mix up
Most worry about recording comes from blending these questions together. Pull them apart and each one has a clear answer.
| Question | Short answer | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Does the website record my calls? | Depends on the site. Omlet doesn't. | The site's design and privacy policy |
| Can the website watch my call live? | Not when the call is peer-to-peer; the video goes between the two devices | How the connection is built |
| Can the other person record me? | Yes, on any video chat | Them and their device |
| Can I stop them recording? | No. You can only control what you show | You |
How peer-to-peer calls work, in plain terms
Most browser video chats use a technology called WebRTC. When you're matched, the site's servers help your two browsers find each other. After that, your video and audio usually travel directly between your device and your partner's device, encrypted, without passing through the site.
Sometimes a direct connection isn't possible, for example on strict workplace networks, some public Wi-Fi and some mobile networks. Then the call is relayed through a server that passes the encrypted stream along. On Omlet, that relay is run by Omlet's network provider, and the call stays encrypted either way.
For the longer version of how the pieces fit together, read peer-to-peer video chat explained simply.
The one trade-off
A direct connection means the two devices need each other's network address, so the connection can share your IP address with the person you're talking to. An IP address usually points to a rough area and an internet provider, not your home. If you'd rather keep it private, a reputable VPN hides it. More in can people see your IP address on video chat.
What Omlet keeps and what it doesn't
Here's what happens to each kind of data on Omlet, taken from its privacy policy.
| Data | What happens to it |
|---|---|
| Video and audio of your calls | Not recorded and not stored |
| Text messages | Not stored, unless they're part of a report or a safety review |
| Nudity check on your partner's video | Runs on your own device; if it fires repeatedly, an automatic report sends only the reason, never an image |
| Checks on text messages | Run on your device; messages that may be harmful get a second review by an AI service, and those reviews aren't used to train AI models |
| Reports | Kept for up to 180 days |
| Most other data | Deleted within 30 days |
| Your name, email or phone number | Not asked for; there's no account |
There are no ads and no advertising cookies, and Omlet doesn't sell data. You can read the full policy from the About page.
When you report someone on Omlet, the report holds the reason you picked, any note you add and, if you choose to include them, the chat messages. That's how moderators review what happened without anyone recording calls.
Does Omegle record you? And what about other sites?
Omegle shut down on 8 November 2023, so it isn't recording anyone today. For any chat site that's still running, the honest answer to "do video chat sites record calls" is: read that site's privacy policy, because practices vary.
When you open a privacy policy, search it for these points:
- The words record, store and retain. A clear statement about whether calls are recorded should be easy to find.
- Peer-to-peer or server-routed. Calls routed through the company's servers are technically easier for a company to capture.
- How moderation works. Some moderation systems work from snapshots of video, others run checks on your device. The policy should say which.
- How long messages and reports are kept, and whether reports include images.
- How to ask for your data to be deleted, and a contact address that actually works.
If a site doesn't say clearly, treat that as an answer in itself and share less.
The other person can record you, so act like they might
Every phone and computer has a built-in screen recorder, and anyone can point a second phone at their screen. None of that runs inside the chat site, so the site gets no signal, and neither do you. Our guide on whether you can tell if someone is screen recording explains why detection doesn't work and the few hints worth noticing.
That isn't a reason to stay off video chat. It's a reason to chat the way you'd act in any public place: friendly, open, and without anything on camera you'd hate to see saved.
How to chat with recording in mind
- Keep your background neutral. No mail, ID cards, work badges or windows with a recognizable view.
- Keep personal details out of the conversation: full name, workplace, neighborhood and social handles.
- Wear what you'd wear in public and keep the camera on your face.
- Use the controls. You can turn your camera off and chat by text, mute your mic, or mute your partner any time.
- Leave at the first push. If someone asks you to undress, do something "one more time" or move to another app, press Next. If they break the rules, report them.
- Never pay a threat. If someone says they recorded you, stop replying, save screenshots of the threats and report them.
Pushy requests are covered in more detail in red flags when talking to strangers online. If intimate images of you are being shared, adults can use StopNCII.org to help stop them spreading on participating platforms.
