Video Chat with People from Belgium
Belgium fits three official languages into a small country. Dutch is spoken in Flanders, in cities like Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Leuven; French in Wallonia, around Liège, Namur and Charleroi; and German in a small community in the east around Eupen. Brussels is officially bilingual and hears nearly every language on its streets, and many Belgians, especially younger adults, speak good English.
Belgium runs on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), so its evenings fall in the afternoon in New York and the small hours in Tokyo. Comics are a classic topic (Tintin and the Smurfs both come from Belgium), along with frites, waffles and chocolate, spring cycling races like the Tour of Flanders, the Red Devils football team and big summer music festivals. How to say hello
A few words of German make a great first impression, even if you switch to English right after.
| Language | Phrase | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dutch | Hallo! Hoe gaat het? | HAH-loh, hoo KHAHT ut | Hi! How's it going? |
| Dutch (Flemish) | Goeiedag! | KHOO-yuh-dahkh | Hello! / Good day! |
| French | Salut, ça va ? | sah-LOO, sah VAH | Hi, how are you? |
| German | Guten Tag! | GOO-ten tahk | Hello! / Good day! |
Tips for chatting with people from Belgium
- Ask about a specific city: Ghent's old harbor, Antwerp's fashion scene, the canals of Bruges or the waffles of Liège all spark stories.
- "Flemish" refers to the Dutch spoken in Flanders: the same language as in the Netherlands, with its own accent and words.
- Brussels has a whole route of comic-strip murals painted on its buildings; asking someone's favorite is a fun, easy opener.
- Someone from the east may prefer German, so don't be surprised by a "Guten Abend".
Only meet people from Belgium
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Belgium, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Belgium and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Belgium, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Belgium are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
