Video Chat with People from France
France is far more than Paris: the person you meet could be from Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille, Nantes or a small town in Brittany or Provence, each with its own accent and dishes. France runs on Central European Time (UTC+1, or UTC+2 in summer), so a 9 PM chat in Paris is mid-afternoon in New York and around midday in California.
French is the language of everyday life, and regional languages such as Breton, Occitan, Alsatian and Corsican live on in places. English comfort varies; opening with 'Bonjour' or 'Salut' before switching is a friendly touch. Food is a reliable topic, from regional cheeses and neighborhood bakeries to Breton crêpes and Marseille's bouillabaisse, and so are football and rugby, the Tour de France, cinema, comics (bande dessinée), French rap and classic chanson. Our French phrase guide helps you go beyond 'bonjour'.

How to say hello
A few words of French make a great first impression, even if you switch to English right after.
| Language | Phrase | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| French | Salut ! Ça va ? | sah-LOO, sah VAH | Hi! How's it going? |
| French | Bonsoir ! | bohn-SWAHR | Good evening! |
| French | Bonjour ! | bohn-ZHOOR | Hello! (polite, until evening) |
| French | Coucou ! | koo-KOO | Hey! (very casual) |
Tips for chatting with people from France
- Use 'vous' if the chat starts formally or the person seems older; most relaxed chats move to 'tu' quickly.
- 'Ça va ?' works as both question and answer: reply 'Ça va, et toi ?' and you're off.
- Ask about their region. Brittany, Provence, Alsace and the Southwest each have their own food, accent and sometimes language.
- August is the classic vacation month, so 'Where did you go this summer?' is a great question from late summer into fall.
Only meet people from France
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from France, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for France and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from France, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from France are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
