Video Chat with People from Finland
Finland is a country of forests and thousands of lakes, with most people living in the south around Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere and Turku, though you might also meet someone from Oulu or from Rovaniemi up in Lapland. Finnish is the language most people grow up with, and Swedish is the second official language, heard mainly along the west and south coasts and in the Åland Islands. English is spoken widely and well, especially by younger adults, so switching languages is rarely a problem.
Finland is on Eastern European Time, one hour ahead of Berlin and two ahead of London, so a 9 PM chat in Helsinki falls in the early afternoon in New York. Sauna comes up naturally, since it's part of everyday life, and so do summer cottages by a lake, the midnight sun and the long winter dark, the northern lights, ice hockey, Karelian pies, salmiakki (salty licorice) and a famously strong metal music scene. If you'd rather meet only people from Finland, the country filter does exactly that.
Finland at a glance
How to say hello
A few words of Finnish make a great first impression, even if you switch to English right after.
| Language | Phrase | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finnish | Moi! | moy | Hi! |
| Finnish | Mitä kuuluu? | MEE-ta KOO-loo | How are you? / What's new? |
| Finnish | Hyvää iltaa! | HEW-vah IL-tah | Good evening! |
| Swedish | Hej! Hur mår du? | hay, hoor mor doo | Hi! How are you? |
Tips for chatting with people from Finland
- Finnish words are always stressed on the first syllable. Get that right and even a short "Mitä kuuluu?" sounds natural.
- Ask how the seasons shape their life; the difference between June's endless light and December's darkness changes everything from sleep to hobbies.
- Some people from the coast or Åland grew up speaking Swedish, so ask which language they use at home rather than assuming.
- Sauna is a friendly icebreaker: ask whether they prefer a wood-fired or electric one, and whether they've tried a swim in an ice hole afterward.
Only meet people from Finland
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Finland, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Finland and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Finland, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Finland are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
