Video Chat with People from Malawi
Lake Malawi runs along much of the country's eastern side, so lake life is never far from the conversation: snorkeling among colorful fish at Cape Maclear, the cliffs at Nkhata Bay, or a ferry ride out to Likoma Island. Inland, the person you meet might be in Lilongwe, the capital; Blantyre, the commercial hub of the south; Mzuzu in the north; or Zomba, beneath its forested plateau. Government, business and the media work in English, the official language, so chatting in English is usually easy. Chichewa is the most widely spoken language, and Tumbuka, Yao and Lomwe are common in different regions.
Malawi runs on Central Africa Time, UTC+2, with no daylight saving, so evenings there fall in the early afternoon in New York and early evening in London. Ask about nsima, the stiff maize porridge eaten with relishes, or chambo, the lake's famous fish. Netball is hugely popular, and the national team, the Queens, has a loyal following. You might also hear about the Lake of Stars music festival, hikes up Mount Mulanje, or the tea estates in the south.

Tips for chatting with people from Malawi
- Open with a quick "Moni" before switching to English; it sets a warm tone right away.
- Ask whether they're more of a lake person or a mountain person; Lake Malawi and Mount Mulanje both have loyal fans.
- Talk netball as well as football. The Queens are a big source of pride, and it's a refreshing change from the usual sports small talk.
- Say "Zikomo kwambiri" (zee-KOH-moh kwahm-BEE-ree), "thank you very much," when someone shares a recommendation.
Only meet people from Malawi
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Malawi, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Malawi and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Malawi, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Malawi are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
