Eastern Africa
Video Chat with People from Kenya
From Nairobi's busy streets to Mombasa's coastline and Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya mixes city energy with some of Africa's best-known landscapes. English and Swahili are both official, and many people move between them easily, often alongside a home language such as Kikuyu, Luo, Luhya or Kalenjin. In Nairobi you'll also hear Sheng, a fast-changing street slang that blends Swahili, English and more. Nakuru, Eldoret and the towns of the Rift Valley are on the map too.
Kenya keeps East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year, so 8 PM in Nairobi is 5 PM in London in winter, 6 PM in summer, and around noon on the US East Coast. Football is a reliable opener, with many fans following the Premier League closely, and rugby sevens and the distance runners who train around Iten and Eldoret come up often. Food talk is easy: nyama choma, ugali with sukuma wiki, chapati and pilau. Ask about the Maasai Mara, the beaches at Diani, or a Gengetone playlist. Brushing up first? Try our Swahili practice page.

Tips for chatting with people from Kenya
- The usual reply to "Habari?" is "Nzuri" (n-ZOO-ree), "good"; to "Niaje?", try "Fiti" (FEE-tee) or "Poa" (POH-ah).
- Many Kenyans switch between English and Swahili mid-sentence, so if you're practicing Swahili, ask your partner to stick to it for a few minutes.
- Ask where their home area is; lots of people in Nairobi have family "upcountry" and enjoy talking about it.
- Wildlife and safaris are fun to talk about, but don't stop there: ask about city life, music and what people get up to on weekends.
Only meet people from Kenya
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Kenya, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Kenya and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Kenya, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Kenya are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
