Video Chat with People from Ethiopia
Much of Ethiopian life happens in the cool highlands. Your chat partner might be in Addis Ababa, one of the highest capital cities in the world, in Bahir Dar on Lake Tana, in Gondar with its old castles, in lakeside Hawassa or in Dire Dawa in the east. Amharic is widely spoken and used nationally, while Afaan Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali and dozens of other languages are spoken across the regions. English is used at universities and in business, so many younger adults in the cities can chat in it.
Ethiopia is on East Africa Time, UTC+3, so its evenings fall between late morning and early afternoon on the US East Coast. Many people also count the hours the traditional way, starting at dawn, and the country follows its own calendar, with New Year in September. Coffee is a great topic: Ethiopia is widely seen as coffee's birthplace, and the coffee ceremony is a real ritual of hospitality. Injera with shiro or tibs, Ethio-jazz and distance running are other favorite subjects. A few words from our Amharic practice page make a warm first impression.

Tips for chatting with people from Ethiopia
- Ask how they take their coffee or whether their family holds a coffee ceremony; it's a warm topic with lots of stories behind it.
- Ethiopian names usually pair a person's own name with their father's first name rather than a family surname, so address people by their first name.
- Amharic is written in the Ge'ez script, where each character stands for a syllable; asking someone to type your name in it is a fun icebreaker.
- Ask for music recommendations, from classic Ethio-jazz to current Ethiopian pop; people are often happy to share a favorite song.
Only meet people from Ethiopia
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Ethiopia, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Ethiopia and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Ethiopia, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Ethiopia are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
