Video Chat with People from Somalia
Somalia has the longest coastline of any country on mainland Africa, and in Mogadishu an evening walk on Lido Beach followed by grilled fish is a favorite way to unwind. Your chat partner could also be in Kismayo, Baidoa, Beledweyne, Garowe or Bosaso. Somali is the language almost everyone shares, written in Latin letters, and Arabic is widely known as well. Many younger adults speak English, and Somali speakers live across the Horn of Africa and in cities around the world, so you may hear a mix of accents and experiences.
Somalia is on East Africa Time, UTC+3, the same clock as Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Mogadishu's evenings arrive around lunchtime in New York and late afternoon in London. Food is the warmest way in: canjeero (also called laxoox), the spongy breakfast flatbread; bariis iskukaris, fragrant spiced rice; suqaar; sambuusa; sweet halwa; and shaah, tea spiced with cardamom. Poetry and proverbs hold a special place in Somali culture, music and football are popular too, and asking for a favorite saying can lead somewhere memorable.

Tips for chatting with people from Somalia
- "Mahadsanid" (mah-HAHD-sah-nid) means "thank you"; using it at the end of a chat is a warm touch.
- From North America, a midday break is the sweet spot: it's already evening in Mogadishu, when people are winding down and free to talk.
- Ask for a favorite Somali proverb or song, then ask what it means; it's a respectful way to go beyond small talk.
- If you're practicing Arabic, mention it; many people will happily switch for a few sentences.
Only meet people from Somalia
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Somalia, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Somalia and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Somalia, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Somalia are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
