Video Chat with People from Rwanda
Rwanda is small, green and steep enough to be nicknamed the land of a thousand hills. Many people you meet will be in Kigali, a tidy, hilly capital with busy spots like Kimironko market and the lively Nyamirambo neighborhood. Outside the capital, people live in places like Musanze, near the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park; Rubavu, on the shore of Lake Kivu; the university town of Huye; and the hills around Nyungwe Forest and its canopy walkway. Kinyarwanda is spoken by nearly everyone. English is the working language of education and business, French is familiar to many people, especially older adults, and Swahili is common in trade.
Rwanda is on Central Africa Time, UTC+2, with no daylight saving. By 8 PM in Kigali, London is in its early evening and New York is just past lunch. Sport is a great opener: Kigali hosted the 2025 road cycling world championships, the Tour du Rwanda draws big crowds, and basketball games fill the BK Arena. Food lovers can ask about goat brochettes with Akabanga chili oil, isombe cassava leaves and sambaza, the little fried fish from Lake Kivu. Rwandan coffee and tea are worth a question too.

How to say hello
A friendly local greeting makes a great first impression.
| Language | Phrase | Say it | Meaning |

| Kinyarwanda | Amakuru? | ah-mah-KOO-roo | How are you? (literally "what's the news?") |
| Kinyarwanda | Ni meza. | nee MEH-zah | I'm fine. |
| Kinyarwanda | Mwiriwe! | mwee-REE-weh | Good afternoon / good evening! |
Tips for chatting with people from Rwanda
- Reply to "Amakuru?" with "Ni meza" and ask it back; it's the standard friendly exchange.
- Ask about Kigali's neighborhoods. Nyamirambo, Kimironko and Kacyiru each have a different feel, and locals have favorites.
- If you're learning Swahili, try a "Habari?" (hah-BAH-ree); plenty of people use it, especially in business and trade.
- On the last Saturday of the month, many people spend the morning on Umuganda community work, so that afternoon is often a better time to connect.
Only meet people from Rwanda
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Rwanda, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Rwanda and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Rwanda, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Rwanda are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
