Video Chat with People from Portugal
From Lisbon's hills and yellow trams to Porto's riverside, Coimbra's old university, the beaches of the Algarve and the islands of Madeira and the Azores, Portugal fits a lot of variety into a small country. Portuguese is the language, spoken with a more clipped sound than in Brazil, and English is widely spoken, especially by younger adults. Many people understand some Spanish too, though they'll appreciate it if you don't open with it.
Mainland Portugal and Madeira use Western European Time (UTC+0, UTC+1 in summer), the same as London, while the Azores run an hour behind. That puts a Lisbon evening in the afternoon on the US East Coast. Football rivalries between Benfica, Porto and Sporting start lively debates, and so do fado, surfing at Nazaré or Ericeira, grilled sardines at June street festivals, pastéis de nata and the countless ways to cook bacalhau.

How to say hello
A few words of Portuguese make a great first impression, even if you switch to English right after.
| Language | Phrase | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portuguese | Olá, tudo bem contigo? | oh-LAH, TOO-doo bayn kon-TEE-goo | Hi, all good with you? |
| Portuguese | Boa noite! | BOH-uh NOYT | Good evening! (also good night) |
| Portuguese | Como estás? | KOH-moo shtahsh | How are you? (casual) |
Tips for chatting with people from Portugal
- People in Portugal say "Boa noite" as a hello once it's dark, not only as goodnight.
- Ask about their region: the north, Lisbon, the Alentejo, the Algarve and the islands each have their own food and accents.
- If you speak Brazilian Portuguese, say so; people will happily point out differences, like "pequeno-almoço" for breakfast where Brazilians say "café da manhã".
- Practice with our Portuguese phrases, and ask them to repeat words; unstressed vowels often disappear in fast speech.
Only meet people from Portugal
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Portugal, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Portugal and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Portugal, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Portugal are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
