Video Chat with People from Lebanon
Lebanon is small, yet the person you're matched with could be in Beirut, the old harbor town of Byblos, Tripoli in the north, Sidon or Tyre in the south, or a mountain village high above the coast. Lebanese Arabic is the everyday language, French is widely spoken, and English is common too, particularly with younger adults. Many people blend all three in one sentence, which is half the fun of talking to someone from here.
Beirut sits two hours ahead of London for most of the year, so its evenings line up with early to mid-afternoon on the US East Coast. Food is a natural opener: mezze spreads, man'oushe with za'atar for breakfast, tabbouleh made properly, and warm knafeh. Music fans can talk about Fairuz, whose songs many people grew up with, alongside current Arabic pop. Plenty of Lebanese have family abroad, so you might also hear about Montreal, Paris or São Paulo. Brush up with our Arabic and French pages, and pick Lebanon in the country filter whenever you want your matches to come from there.
Lebanon at a glance
How to say hello
A few words of Arabic make a great first impression, even if you switch to English right after.
| Language | Phrase | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lebanese Arabic | مرحبا | MAR-ha-ba | Hello |
| Lebanese Arabic | شو الأخبار؟ | shu l-akh-BAAR | What's new? |
| French | Salut, ça va ? | sa-LOO, sa VA | Hi, how's it going? |
| Lebanese mix | Hi, kifak, ça va? | hi, KEE-fak, sa VA | A playful three-language hello: English, Arabic and French |
Tips for chatting with people from Lebanon
- Expect switches between Arabic, French and English mid-sentence. Answer in whichever you're comfortable with, and the other person will usually follow your lead.
- Ask about their town or neighborhood rather than the country as a whole; food, accents and favorite weekend spots change a lot over short distances.
- Pick up a couple of everyday words such as "yalla" (let's go) and "tfaddal" (please, go ahead); you'll hear them constantly.
- Evenings in Lebanon often run late, so a chat at 10 or 11 PM Beirut time is perfectly normal; that's mid-afternoon in New York.
Only meet people from Lebanon
Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Lebanon, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:
- Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
- Search for Lebanon and select it.
- Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Lebanon, or switch back to Worldwide any time.
Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.
The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Lebanon are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.
Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.
