Video Chat with People from Hungary

Updated · 3 min read

Hungarian often surprises people who hear it for the first time. It isn't related to the languages of its neighbors; it belongs to the Uralic family, distantly linked to Finnish and Estonian, so even a simple "Szia" feels like an achievement. You might meet someone from Budapest, split by the Danube into hilly Buda and flat Pest, or from Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Győr or a summer town on Lake Balaton.

Hungary runs on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), and Budapest evenings line up with mid-afternoon in New York. English is common among younger adults, and some older people learned German. Good topics include Budapest's thermal baths, lángos by the lake, paprika-rich dishes like gulyás and chicken paprikás, the Sziget Festival, water polo and football, and Hungarian inventions such as the Rubik's Cube.

Tips for chatting with people from Hungary

  • Hungarian names come family name first, so Kovács Anna goes by Anna; ask which name to use if you're unsure.
  • "Szia" doubles as hi and bye, so you'll hear it at both ends of a chat.
  • Read Hungarian words with care: "sz" sounds like s and "s" sounds like sh, so Budapest is closer to BOO-dah-pesht. Our Hungarian phrases cover the rest.
  • Ask about a favorite thermal bath or summers at Balaton; plenty of people have stories to share.

Only meet people from Hungary

Omlet matches you Worldwide by default. To meet only people from Hungary, use the country filter, the only filter Omlet has:

  1. Open Omlet and press Country on the control panel.
  2. Search for Hungary and select it.
  3. Press Start. Press Next to meet someone else from Hungary, or switch back to Worldwide any time.

Your first day is free: you add a card through Stripe to start it, and nothing is charged that day. When the 24 hours end, the country filter costs $3 one time, charged to that card, unless you cancel before then in Settings (if you cancel, you can still pick a country until the day ends). It's not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on that device and browser. It doesn't carry over to other devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data removes it. There's one free day per device, home network and card. Payment goes through Stripe, so Omlet never sees your card number.

The filter works both ways, and matching can be slower when fewer people from Hungary are online. Chatting itself is free, and Worldwide matching never costs anything.

Your own country is detected automatically and shown to the people you meet as a flag.

How do I only meet people from Hungary on Omlet?

Press Country, search for Hungary and select it, then press Start. Your first day with the country filter is free: you add a card to start, and $3 is charged once when the day ends unless you cancel in Settings. What's the best time to video chat with people in Hungary?

Evenings usually work best, roughly 6–11 PM Budapest time (Central European Time), when most people have finished work for the day. The "Best time to meet" box on this page converts that window into your own time zone.

Do I need to speak Hungarian to chat with people from Hungary?

No, but a few words help. The official language of Hungary is Hungarian. Omlet's interface is in English and there's no translation, so you'll talk in whatever language you share. Opening with a simple "Szia!" is a friendly start.
